Specifically, using a newly developed cognitive control task battery, we will test the counter-intuitive hypothesis that MT is produces an enhancement in the neural mechanism and circuits associated with reactive (rather than proactive) control.

Although mindfulness practices are rapidly gaining in popularity as a lifestyle intervention to enhance psychological health and well-being, the brain basis of their effects are still not well-understood, particularly in healthy populations.   The knowledge gained from this project will promote greater understanding and more informed decision-making regarding the potential benefits to be gained from instruction and training in mindfulness and by providing innovative experimental tools and a novel theoretical framework from which to empirically evaluate and better understand the potential impact of MT programs as lifestyle interventions for enhancing psychological well-being in healthy populations.
