The Summer Math Crash Course is back!

Registration: April 12th, 2023 (Friday) – May 17th, 2023 (Friday) (EXTENDED)

When: June 3rd (Mon) – August 2nd (Fri), 2024
Where: Hybrid* (on Zoom and in-person, location TBA)

*Students will be able to participate fully remotely and all tutoring sessions will be accessible via zoom.


This crash course is targeted to Imaging Science Graduate Students and affiliated students, and researchers (McKelvey School of Engineering, Radiology). However, all WashU graduate students and researchers are welcome to participate in the courses. Feel free to reach out to us ( if you have any questions!

What is this?

The Math Crash Course hosted by the Imaging Science Student Council is an intensive 9-week summer program designed to introduce incoming Imaging Science students to many of the math concepts they’ll encounter during their first-year courses. These courses include:

  • BME 570: Mathematics of Imaging Science
  • ESE 520: Probability and Stochastic Processes
  • ESE 589: Biological Imaging Technology
  • ESE 5932: Computational Methods for Imaging Science

Concepts covered in this crash course will be tailored toward becoming familiar with the mathematical concepts. Therefore, complete mastery of these skills is not expected due to the 9-week time constraint. This crash course is divided into the following three sections:

  • Linear Algebra with Applications in Machine Learning | 5 weeks | June 3rd – July 5th, 2024
    • Choose between beginner, advanced, and applied courses
  • Calculus with Applications in Probability | 4 weeks | July 8th – August 2nd, 2024
    • Choose between beginner, advanced, and applied courses
    • The advanced course covers Signals & Systems

Disclaimer: In a typical university setting, these concepts would be taught over the course of many semesters. For this reason, the goal of the crash course is familiarity with these concepts and not mastery!

  2. Our goal is exposure, not mastery.
  3. Work together whenever doing so is helpful.

When is this?

The math crash course is a 9-week summer program that will begin on June 3rd and will follow the schedule below:

  • Linear Algebra: June 3rd – July 5th, 2024
  • Calculus: July 8th – August 2nd, 2024

You may choose to register for both sections or select only the sections that are most relevant to you.

How will this be taught?

The course will follow a self-study approach with textbooks, problem sets, and materials posted online and curated by current Imaging Science PhD students.

Tutoring sessions will be held in-person with Zoom option 1-2 times per week, and students will be encouraged to bring questions to these sessions. There will be one beginner and one advanced problem session, during which tutors will walk you through key concepts and go over example problems. Feel free to join as many sessions as you like.

Independent tutoring sessions can be scheduled with our tutors for more individual assistance depending on tutor availability.

Communication between students and tutors will be through Discord. We also encourage the formation of study groups using Discord.

Is this course right for me?

Making the decision to register for the math crash course is entirely up to you. We have provided the following self-assessments for each of the sections to allow you to determine if you are prepared for the concepts that will be appearing in your imaging science courses. The course is designed to cover introduction-level material so no math background is required.
