Chia-Wei Woo is the founding president of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, regarded as one of the best universities in Asia and in the world. In 1983, at the age of 45, he became President of San Francisco State University, the first Chinese-American to head a major university in the US. He has received numerous awards in recognition for his superb contribution to higher academia including the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award by the United Nations Association, Golden Key by the City of San Francisco, Honorary Citizenship by the Government of Shenzhen, Gold Bauhinia Star by the Government of Hong Kong, CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by the Queen of United Kingdom, and Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur by the President of France , among many others.
