Chinese Students Association is so excited to be hosting Lisa Ling! Lisa Ling has reported on such an amazing repertoire of works and stories that we know a one-hour speech cannot fully capture.

How did Lisa Ling get her start?

Lisa Ling started in television after she was chosen as one of the 4 hosts of Scratch, a teen magazine show in California. Then at the age of 18, Ling joined the Channel One News team (along with other anchors such as Anderson Cooper) as one of their youngest reporters and anchors.  At her time there, she was assigned to report in Iraq and Afghanistan at the age of 21, and she won various awards for her reporting and documentaries.

Lisa Ling co-hosted The View from 1999 to 2002. During this time, she proposed segments such as “Ling’s Money Thing,” on investing for women. Ling also challenged perspectives of various viewers on “hot topics.” For example, After 9/11, Ling commented: “What happened to the United States was a catastrophic event and the worst terrorist attack in human history. Yet maybe before we seek revenge, we should ask the question – why should anyone want to make such an attack on the U.S.?”

Lisa Ling hosted a show on the Oprah Winfrey Network called Our America with Lisa Ling that ran from 2011 to 2014. This documentary television series covered topics such as sex trafficking, teenage pregnancy, and the foster system, among many others.

“When I was a kid, I hated being Asian because I was so different from everyone I grew up with… Yet, I never really felt entirely American because I looked so different. To be able to host a show called Our America is just a real source of pride for me.” -Lisa Ling (interview with CAAM)
