Dr. Petersen has been involved in the development of community- based models of mental health care since the early-1990s. She was involved in the Mental Health and Poverty Project (2005-2010), a research consortium in four African countries, where she assisted with the integration of mental health into primary health care using implementation science. Currently, she leads and collaborates on several research projects on mental health in developing contexts, including the Programme for Integrating Mental Health Care (PRIME) in South Africa, EMERALD (Emerging Mental Health Systems in Low- and Middle-income Countries) where she leads a work package that involves capacity science to strengthen health systems for scale-up integrated mental health care.
