We routinely use (ultra)centrifugation, chromatography, and preparative electrophoresis to isolate proteins/protein complexes from photosynthetic cells/tissues. We are lucky to SEE them, owing to their pigment(s) bound within the protein scaffold. The pigments capture and transmit light energy and convert it to the energy form that can be fixed for chemical storage.
