A prominent proponent for the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter and author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior.

She is on autism spectrum and an outspoken proponent of the autism rights and neurodiversity movements.

In 2016, she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2017 into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
