A Puerto Rican physician and public health administrator.

A vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

She was the first woman, first person of color, and first Hispanic to serve as Surgeon General of USA (1990-1993).

In 1994, Novello was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
