A leader in the field of maize cytogenetics.
She received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of genetic transposition; the first woman to receive that prize without sharing it.
Among other places, she worked at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
In 1970 she was awarded the National Medal of Science.
