The first African American woman to receive a doctorate degree in zoology.

Her contribution to the scientific community was recognized by Congress (resolution H.Con.Res.96.) as one of the 5 African-American women “who have broken through many barriers to achieve greatness in science.“

In addition to the occupation-related damage to her eyes, she was affected by mental health problems.
