Improving Pedagogy of the Oppressed

Pedagogy is most commonly understood as the approach to teaching the theory and practice of learning and how this process influences and is influenced by the social, political, and psychological development of learners. The teaching strategy was being followed by teachers working under National Rural Support Programmers’ Education Equity and Quality in Afghanistan and Pakistan (EEQAP) project implementing area was too old. After implementing the EEQAP project National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) team has improved the teaching strategy among teachers and taught them about Project Based Learning (PBL) techniques. PBL, taken as an academic discipline, is the strategy of how knowledge and skills are imparted in the educational context, and it considers the interaction that takes place during learning. PBL is a teaching method in which complex real-world problems are used as the vehicle to promote student learning of concepts and principles as opposed to the direct presentation of facts and concepts.

The education system has given the country some fine minds and we are glad that NRSP’s beneficiaries too intend to become a part of the illustrious teaching of teachers.

“I want to become a teacher because I want to educate the girls of my village. I would increase the quality of education and make it where every girl of my town will get education and fully serve their families and Nation. I will become a teacher and serve the nation as well.”

Azra (10 year old student in class five at a Government Girls Primary School in Ghotki, Pakistan)

Azra, as a daughter of a laborer father and housemaid mother, is impressed by her teacher’s teachings. She also likes the way people respect teachers and the service they do. In the process of achieving her goals, Azra wants to study well, become independent, and lend a helping hand to her parents as well when she grows up. When asked about the current education provided by the government of Sindh, Azra told us that she likes to study through Project Based Learning. This technique has been taught to our teachers by NRSP team working under the EEQAP project. “I like to study through games and activities, and I also love the way our teachers are delivering lectures now” she added.

Azra shared that her classmates, Parveen and Zarqa, both have attended inclusive education training and love the newly introduced teaching techniques which stresses love and friendship between students and teachers. Azra also shared, “I like the way Miss Noor teaches English and Maths. She motivates us to learn and also advises us. I will work hard and score good grades to become the person of my dreams”.
