Eligibility Criteria
Candidates from the United States
- Interest in applying dissemination and implementation (D&I) and data science methodologies in a global health area, with special focus on projects related to:
children, adolescents, and their caregiving families; parenting; HIV/AIDS; mental health; cancer; nutrition; and environmental health
- Postdoctoral professionals within 6 years of completing terminal degrees such as MD, PhD, PharmD, ScD, DrPH etc.
- US citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent US resident
- Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds in social and behavioral sciences are encouraged to apply.
- Commitment and ability to work in a lower-middle-income country for 12 months
Candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa
- Interest in applying dissemination and implementation (D&I) and data science methodologies in a global health area, with special focus on projects related to: children, adolescents, and their caregiving families; parenting; HIV/AIDS; mental health; cancer; nutrition; and environmental health
- Commitment to spending 2-3 months at one of the 4 U.S. based institutions
- Must have completed a terminal degree (PhD, MBChB, etc.) and be an early career researcher
- Demonstrated track record of excellence and potential to exhibit a successful research
trajectory in academia - Must be a citizen of one of the following nations: Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda
Eligibility note:
Applicants who have previously participated as a trainee in a Fogarty Global Health Fellowship program including ACHIEVE or another consortium (click here for Fogarty Global Health Fellowship/LAUNCH program details) may only be eligible to reapply for a second appointment if they participated first as a pre-doctoral fellow and are now applying as a postdoctoral fellow.
Application Phase One
The Phase One application open May 15 – July 15, 2024.
If you are a U.S.-based applicant, please contact Chelsea Hand-Sheridan (c.hand-sheridan@wustl.edu) to inquire about the process for submitting an off-cycle application.
For the Phase One Application, we kindly ask you to submit a letter of intent and your CV. You may address the letter to the ACHIEVE Review Committee. The letter of intent should be 1-2 pages and should briefly describe the following:
a. Your background
b. Your research interests
c. Your long-term research and career goals
d. How the ACHIEVE program will contribute to your long-term goals
e. Preferred approved research sites and mentors (up to 2 for each) and your rationale for selecting them. Please include a description of any work you have done with these mentors, as applicable.
Selected candidates will be invited to submit a full application (see below). They will be asked to attend a grant application information session to receive additional information about the focus of the program and guidance on proposal development.
Application Phase Two (invited candidates only)
Phase 2 application opens in August. Eligible applicants will receive an email with an invitation to apply and the link to the application. Candidates may be contacted to conduct an interview.
Phase 2 application requirements:
All materials should be saved and uploaded as PDF and labeled “LastName_FirstName_2024_Document Name.pdf”
1. A 6-page research proposal that includes the following:
a. Project Title (please do not use ALL-CAPS)
b. Specific Aims (maximum one page): The specific aims section should state concisely the goals of the proposed research and summarize the expected outcome(s), including
the impact that the results of the proposed research will exert on the research field(s) involved. You can read more about how to structure your Specific Aims section here.
c. Research Strategy (3-4 pages): The research project proposal includes the following components: background/significance, innovation, and approach/methods. You can read more about how to structure your research strategy here.
d. Protections for Human Subjects: This document should include a description the risks to human subjects and protection against risks
e. Budget and Budget Justification: A high-level budget that outlines the major costs needed to complete your research. The budget should not exceed $10,000.
Note: Biosketch, CDP, and references are not included in the page limit.
2. Current NIH Biosketch (non-fellowship format): For NIH Biosketch templates and guidance, visit https://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms/biosketch.htm.
3. Career Development Plan (CDP) (2 pages maximum): The CDP should include the following:
a. Background, including relevant past research experience and coursework
b. Career goals
c. How participating in ACHIEVE would advance your professional development and research
d. Proposed outcomes and corresponding timeline
4. References/Letters of Recommendation: You will be asked to provide the names of two references who will be contacted via email for letters of recommendation in Phase One of the application, but the will not be contacted unless you are selected to move to Phase Two and confirm your intent to apply. The letters must be from faculty/Senior Research Scientists who have first-hand knowledge of your past performance and potential for conducting global health research. If you intend to maintain affiliation with your current employer, one of the letters must be from your department chair or equivalent and should describe how your current workload will be reduced to provide the protected time needed to complete the program.
(Please note: You do not need to secure a letter of recommendation or support from your proposed site mentor unless you already have an established working/mentorship relationship with them and they have first-hand knowledge of your past performance and potential for conducting global health research.)
