As I await IRB approval on my ACHIEVE Project, Improving Nutritional Status of Neonate Surgical Patients with Gastrointestinal Disorders, I have been fortunate enough to spend time the pediatric surgery ward at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, which cares for neonates with gastrointestinal disorders, and I have come to understand the various challenges and obstacles that doctors here face daily. The resilience, dedication, and innovation of the residents, nurses, and pediatric surgeons cannot be overstated. The diligent care that they provide, ensures that these infants have the best chance at having a favorable outcome.
The residents at Mulago are an epitome of hard work and ingenuity. Faced with a large patient population, and equipment shortages, they demonstrate an unwavering commitment to learning and healing. They approach every challenge as an opportunity to innovate—whether it’s repurposing equipment in new ways, devising low-cost solutions for complex medical problems, or collaborating creatively to meet patient needs.
Nurses at Mulago are another source of inspiration. Often working under difficult conditions and with limited supplies, they go above and beyond in caring for their patients. They regularly demonstrate not only their professional skills but their profound dedication to the well-being of those they care for. Their compassion, even in the face of exhaustion and scarcity, serves as a constant reminder of why we entered this field in the first place—to serve.
The pediatric surgeons at Mulago are equally impressive. Operating on children with complex medical conditions, they find ways to deliver the best care possible despite equipment shortages. They often rely on ingenuity to modify surgical procedures and use limited tools in ways that achieve optimal outcomes. Their work proves that the impact of a skilled and dedicated medical team isn’t determined by resources but by the heart, mind, and creativity of those delivering care.
As a medical professional, the work of these individuals motivates me to strive for excellence. Their resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to their patients inspire me to think beyond the limitations and always ask, “How can I make this work for my patients?” Their example pushes me to be a better doctor and researcher—one who is not only knowledgeable but deeply compassionate, resourceful, and committed to making a difference in every way that I can.
