Research:
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome: My laboratory is focused on the mechanisms linking metabolism to excitability in multiple tissues, including pancreas, heart, vasculature and brain. We are particularly interested on the mechanisms underlying diabetes and cardiovascular disease, with special emphasis on the development of secondary consequences of hyperglycemia in both monogenic and type-2 diabetes. We are also exploring the contribution of environmental and dietary (obesity) factors, as well as intermitting fasting and caloric restriction on diabetes development and progression; and the association between diabetes in pregnancy and offspring outcomes. More recently, we became interested in the association between diabetes and brain dysfunction, especially cognitive learning and memory deficits. Over the years, we have made major breakthroughs in these fields, including novel therapeutic options. The work in our lab has broad relevance in physiology and disease, with potentially significant implications for clinical treatment options in human diseases.
