Description of Research:
Research in the Blumer laboratory aims to identify novel mechanisms of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling and to elucidate functions of these mechanisms in development, physiology and disease. Because various ion channels are targets of GPCR signaling, elucidating their regulation by these novel mechanisms is a major objective. Biochemical, pharmacological, molecular and cellular studies performed in the lab form the basis for establishing collaborations with expert electrophysiologists in the WUSM community to elucidate function in native cell types, especially neurons, smooth muscle and endothelial cells. This work has broad relevance in physiology and disease, including cardiovascular disease, morphine action, vision, and neurodegeneration.
