Dr. Damalie Nalwanga is a pediatrician, assistant lecturer and doctoral student at the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, Makerere University, College of Health Sciences. Her doctoral research is focused on nutrition among children hospitalized with severe pneumonia with the aim of improving their treatment outcomes and overall health after discharge. She has background training and experience in tropical infectious diseases particularly HIV, TB and pneumonia in children. Her interest in HIV dates back to her early years of medical practice at the Infectious Diseases Institute in Uganda, where she was exposed to the unique multidisciplinary challenges HIV infected patients and their families face. With improved treatment and access to ART, HIV related morbidity and mortality has reduced and child survival has significantly improved. Prioritizing the quality of life including their neurodevelopmental outcomes has become more critical. Dr. Nalwanga is interested in identifying ways to improve overall physical and mental health of children threatened by HIV and other infectious diseases in order to maximize their neurocognitive potential and productivity as adults.
