The Willie Laboratory for Behavioral Neuromodulation team is actively developing novel brain stimulation strategies to treat epilepsy, cognitive impairments, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disorders.

Dr. Willie obtained his B.A. in Biochemistry with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin and his Medical Doctorate and Doctorate of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas where his graduate work focused on elucidating the fundamental role of the neuropeptide orexin in the sleep disorder narcolepsy. He completed his neurosurgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis and his fellowship in stereotactic, functional, and epilepsy surgery at Emory University in Atlanta. He practiced as a neurosurgeon-scientist at Emory University for 9 years where he developed a robust clinical practice, secured funding from private foundations and the National Institute of Mental Health, and contributed high-profile clinical neurosurgical and basic neuroscience publications. Dr. Willie returned to Washington University in 2020. He has expertise in human and animal neurophysiology of sleep, cognition, and emotion.
