Thomas Kannampallil, PhD, FAMIA is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. I also have affiliate appointments at the he Institute for Informatics and the Department of Computer Science. I am the inaugural Director for Acute Care Innovation Research in the Department of Anesthesiology.
In my operational role, I am the Associate Chief Research Information Officer at the School of Medicine. I also serve as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Biomedical Informatics.
My research interests are broadly in the areas of clinical decision support and in the use of machine learning approaches for improving clinical cognition and patient safety.
Currently, I am the PI/MPI on 3 R01s through the National Library of Medicine, National Institute on Aging and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
I was previously the Director of primary care informatics research at University of Illinois, and assistant director of the Center for Cognitive Studies in Medicine and Public Health at the New York Academy of Medicine. I was also a researcher at the National Center for Cognitive Informatics and Decision Making at University of Texas, and Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
