Tewodros Liyew, MD, MPH

Dr. Tewodros (Ted) Liyew is a first-year Ph.D. in public health sciences student from Ethiopia. Before attending the Brown School, Dr.  Liyew completed his M.D. and M.P.H. in Addis Ababa University and Addis Continental Institute of Public Health in Ethiopia. After graduation, he worked as a clinician, and medical director at tertiary health facilities in Ethiopia. For the last 3 years before joining Washington University in St. Louis, he worked as a health system strengthening advisor at Jhpiego corporation. He designed quality improvement programs to enhance health system and improve surgical outcomes in 31 health facilities in Ethiopia. Since March of 2023, Dr. Ted co-launched a research project, ‘Integrating Care for Sexual and Gender-based Violence Survivors in Newly Restored Sexual and Reproductive Health Facilities in Amhara, Ethiopia.’ Dr. Ted’s research interest lies at the intersection of non-communicable diseases including mental health, health systems and health policy. Dr. Ted is married and a father. He enjoys traveling, reading, and writing short stories in his spare time.
