2024 Midwest LGBTQ+ Rights Conference: Recap

The 2024 Midwest LGBTQ+ Rights Conference was held on March 6th, 7th, and 8th in Crowder Courtyard and the Bryan Cave Moot Court Room at WashULaw in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Conference was organized by MacKenzie Palmer and Elia Despradel, who chose to focus the Conference on the themes of movement building, community lawyering, and widening the lens we take when we think and talk about oppression and justice.

Palmer and Despradel wanted to highlight the fact that LGBTQ+ communities and individuals have diverse interactions and intersections with legal institutions, which are irreducible, multitudinous, and extend far beyond judicial opinions.

At different points throughout the Conference, attendees were able to eat delicious food prepared by AAPI- and women-owned businesses, heal from first- and second-hand oppression related trauma through meditation, breath work, yoga, and a healing circle, learn about queer legal theories and topics by renowned experts, engage with the perspectives of various practicing queer lawyers, professors, and judges, and connect with others who care deeply about LGBTQ+ rights at a Networking Happy Hour.

Thanks to our 2024 Sponsors, OUTLaw was able to open the Conference to the public and provide all of our Conference Programming at no cost to attendees.

“We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers.”
