This scholarship was generously started by David G. Mutch, MD, the Ira C. and Judith Gall Professor, in partnership with the Nelson Alumni Society to support and enhance the scholarly research activity of residents. Dr. Mutch is a nationally known Gynecologic Oncologist that has been with the department since the beginning of his training. He is a 1980 graduate of Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He went on to complete his fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Duke University Medical Center and returned to Washington University in 1987 as a junior faculty member. He spent the past 36 years of his career as a pioneer in the field of Gynecologic Oncology and transformed the clinical practice into one of the busiest in the country. Dr. Mutch embodies Washington University’s tripartite mission with his clinical aptitude, education of the future generation of OBGYNs, and leadership in gynecologic oncology research on a national scale. In June of 2022, he was honored with a professorship in his name, The David G. and Lynn Mutch Distinguished Professorship. Dr. Mutch has won two Teacher of the Year awards among residents, and trained more than 40 gynecologic oncology fellows that are working throughout the country. He has received multiple research grants, and was most recently awarded the prestigious SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) grant from the National Cancer Institute and is expected retire from his clinical practice in January 2024 to focus on research.
About the Scholarship & Application Process
The scholarship will give two awards, up to $1,000, twice per academic year, resulting in a total of 4 awards. Should expenses not reach the full $1,000, any unutilized portion of the awarded funds will be retained by the Nelson Society for future scholarships. The application can be found below and submitted using DocuSign. Your PI will be included in the submission process. Late entries may not be accepted. Awards will only be selected for presentations given in the current academic year.
Eligibility:
The following must be applicable in order to be considered for this scholarship:
- Your abstract was submitted AND accepted
- You were not previously awarded the David G. Mutch Residency Research Scholarship
- Your project must be sponsored by a Washington University faculty member
- If there is pending funding for the same conference, you cannot apply for the scholarship
*Priority will be given for oral abstracts or workshop presentations that are given in the current academic year.

- Conference name, location and travel dates

Applications are accepted twice per academic year. No late submissions allowed.

Review Process
The Nelson Society Board follows a blinded review process where a non-voting administrator is the only person aware of applicants and research PIs. Awards will be given within 4 weeks of the due date. Receipts must be turned in for reimbursement.
If your submission is accepted, you will be contacted and should anticipate the following:
- Submit pictures of your presentation to the Program Director
- Return receipts after the conference for reimbursement to the Program Coordinator
