Katherine Steffen, M.D., M.H.S.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Steffen completed her medical school training at the University of Iowa, followed by a residency at the Harriet Lane Pediatric Residency Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She remained at Johns Hopkins for fellowship training in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. During this time, she received her Master of Health Sciences (Clinical Research) from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She developed an interest in Dissemination and Implementation research as an Instructor at Washington University and used implementation tools to reduce phlebotomy volume and need for blood transfusion in the Pediatric ICU. Dr. Steffen is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Her research will focus on using implementation science methods to promote use of evidence-based restrictive approaches to blood transfusion in critically ill children, as evidence suggests that risks of transfusion outweigh the benefits in many cases. She will investigate the feasibility and acceptability of an implementation strategy that includes computerized clinical decision support.
