Cecelia Calhoun, M.D.,M.P.H.S.

Dr. Calhoun is a Pediatric and Young Adult Hematologist at Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital where her clinical and research interests center on the care of young adults with sickle cell disease. A native of Detroit, she completed her medical school training at Wayne State University, followed by general pediatrics residency at Michigan State University. During her pediatric hematology oncology fellowship at Washington University she also obtained a Masters in Population Health Sciences, which engendered her interest in Dissemination and Implementation Science. She has worked with the NIH Sickle Cell Disease Implementation Consortium to understand barriers and facilitators to care that patients face as they transition from pediatric to adult care.

Dr. Calhoun currently holds a joint appointment in the Divisions of Pediatric and Adult Hematology where she cares for patients in the Young Adult Sickle Cell Disease Transition Clinic. During the MTIS award period, Dr. Calhoun will use implementation science methods to understand and optimize the development and implementation of structured transition programs for young adults with sickle cell disease who represent a subpopulation that is at high risk for morbidity and mortality. Understanding intervention design and implementation in this population has broad application and significant impact.
