Lunar Meteorite: Northwest Africa 16761
from The Meteoritical Bulletin, No. 113 Northwest Africa 16761 (NWA 16761)(Northwestern Africa) Lunar meteorite (fragmental breccia) History: Purchased by Jay Piatek from a Moroccan meteorite dealer in 2016. Physical Characteristics: Single stone, fusion crust absent, interior exposure shows a brecciated texture. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe and reflected light microscope examination of a polished mount shows a fragmental breccia with dominant plagioclase, olivine and clinopyroxene. Minor phases include chromite, ilmenite and Fe-sulfide. Geochemistry: (M. Spilde, UNM) Olivine Fa37.5±8.0, Fe/Mn=98±10, n=6; clinopyroxene Fs37.2±10.6, Fe/Mn=59±7, n=7; plagioclase An96.6±0.7, n=4. Classification: Lunar fragmental breccia. Specimens: 15.6 g on deposit at UNM, Jay Piatek holds the main mass. |
