One out of every one hundred kids is born with a heart defect — the leading cause of infant death and the most common birth defect in the United States. About a quarter of those kids will go on to need one or many heart surgeries. The Children’s Heart Foundation’s mission is to fund the most promising research to advance the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of congenital heart defects. This research truly benefits kids as survival rates and life expectancy for CHD patients have improved remarkably (37.5% since 1999) because of recent medical advancements in pediatric cardiology.
