Tyrone Parchment, PhD

Assistant Professor, Social Work, Boston College

Dr. Parchment’s academic training and research experience provide him with an excellent background in rigorous methodological, conceptual, and statistical research training in social science and social work practice that can be applied at the domestic and international levels.  His research program is informed by a decade of direct practice and research experience that focuses on family behavioral health with an emphasis on male caregiving/fathers among racially and ethnically marginalized communities both in the United States and internationally. Specifically, he is interested in five areas: (1) exploring parenting practices, engagement and parental involvement of female and male caregivers; (2) identifying the unique direct and indirect contributions of parental (male and female caregivers) emotional and behavioral health on children and family well-being; (3) examining aspects of father/male caregivers involvement in the lives of children and it’s influences on their own socio-emotional well-being; (4) barriers and facilitators of effectively engaging caregivers, in particular, fathers/male caregivers in family-based behavioral health settings; and (5) implementation science strategies to enhance father/male caregiver involvement in family-based behavioral health interventions.

Dr. Parchment worked with his mentor, Dr. Theresa Betancourt, as part of the Youth Forward U19 NIMH grant in Sierra Leone.  He has developed two mixed methods manuscripts, analyzing qualitative data focused: 1) father engagement in a home visiting family-based cluster randomized trial in Rwanda; and 2) exploring parenting practices of fathers in Sierra Leone who experience prolonged trauma experiences.
