Research Overview

Coal produces 40% of the world’s electricity and more than three billion people burn biomass for cooking. Combustion of coal and biomass generates both gaseous and particulate pollutants. The focus of this cluster is to understand pollutant formation and subsequently develop effective control technologies. Combustion is studied in different types of systems including a flat flame, drop-tube furnace and cookstoves.

Areas of focus includes:

Coal

  • Submicron particle formation
  • Particles and mercury capture using ESP
  • Mercury control technologies

Biomass

  • Physical and chemical characterization
  • Modeling of particle formation
  •  Portable online instrumentation for field measurements
