In the spring of 2007 I held the Walt Whitman Distinguished Fulbright Chair in American Studies at Utrecht University.  My Fulbright hosts Dr. Jaap Verheul (U.S. History) and Dr. Derek Rubin (American literature) were not only my colleagues in American Studies, but also became my friends.  I taught two sections of an undergraduate class on the Harlem Renaissance and a graduate course on food, ethnicity, and race in American culture. Over the course of the semester I also travelled around the Netherlands and guest lectured at Leiden Unviersity, as the guest of Dr. Joke Kardux, and Radboud University in Nijmegen, as the guest of Dr. Hans Bak.  The Fulbright was one of the highlights of my academic career.
