Young Advocates for the Incarcerated (YAftI) is a WashULaw student organization focused on increasing awareness of and addressing issues faced by incarcerated persons and their families and persons being represented by public defenders. Examples of past projects include a formal clothing drive to help stock public defenders’ closets with court-appropriate clothing for defendants who cannot afford or do not have access their own and a data collection event mapping incarcerated persons’ access to hygienic products and commissary at carceral institutions throughout Missouri. As a new student organization that began only last Fall, we will be relying on new members to help shape, cement, and expand our organization. The organization includes people interested in both the prosecutorial and defense sides of criminal law as well as students who do not intend to practice criminal law but are interested in community service. Please reach out to rservilio@wustl.edu with any questions about getting involved or ideas for projects you would like to see YAftI become involved in!
