The Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change (ESCC) Internship Program is a multi-stakeholder program that places students in research and project teams, while simultaneously providing professional development and enrichment training.
This page only lists the internship positions currently open for which we are accepting applications. Application deadlines are specified below for each employer. As students leave to graduate or study abroad, we usually have a few new openings each semester.

Positions for Summer 2024
Office of Sustainability
We are looking for enthusiastic and hard-working graduate or undergraduate students who want to be part of the movement to advance sustainability at Washington University. The multi-semester positions require a commitment of 5-10 hours/week during the school year; summer positions are full-time (37.5 hours/week). Associates work collaboratively in groups on projects with oversight from the Office of Sustainability staff and will engage in a broad range of projects including communications and design, renewable energy, alternative transportation, waste diversion, sustainable food and dining, green buildings, green offices program, etc.
Spend your summer in St. Louis doing a deep-dive in sustainable operations with one of the numerous Office of Sustainability collaborators. Student interns will gain exposure to real-life scenarios in which people are taking a sustainability challenge and figuring out how to operationalize a solution.
Host sites include the following partners: Dining Services (2), Environmental Health & Safety, the Radiology Department, and Sam Fox School of Art & Design (more detailed descriptions of summer projects will be posted soon!). The goal of the placement is to advance one or more programs, initiatives, research, data collection, reporting, etc. connected to advancing sustainability activities at WashU while providing students with professional experiences.
In addition to working closely with a direct supervisor from within the host department, interns in this program will receive training and mentorship from Office of Sustainability staff and participate in the Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change (ESCC) Internship Program. The ESCC Program includes all students participating within the operational sustainability program, as well as other sustainability-related internships at WashU and within the St. Louis community. Participants are connected to one another through weekly professional development and social activities. The ESCC internship program offers an enriching cohort experience in which students report numerous benefits ranging from the development of soft and hard skills, as well as deepening a foundational network of peers and professional mentors.
The operational sustainability internship program spans June 3 – August 2 with the option to extend to Aug 9 (9-10 weeks). This full-time internship position will take place in person, on campus, with some flexibility for occasional remote work. The deadline to submit an application is March 31.
Successful summer interns will have the opportunity to be considered for placement in part-time internship positions at the Office of Sustainability for the following academic year.

The Office of Sustainability is seeking a practicum student (or students) to lead efforts to build on the 12-year success of the Share Our Stuff program that collects and recirculates materials from student move out after the close of the academic year. The program coordinator will guide and develop the program, channeling new resources (a physical warehouse space and store) to achieve greater social and environmental impact for the WashU and St. Louis communities. The coordinator will develop standard operating procedures for program operations, evaluation and assessment tools, annual reports for leadership, and marketing materials. In addition, the coordinator will support program operations and logistics, in collaboration with staff from the Office of Sustainability, Campus Mail, the Office of Government and Community Relations, Residential Life, and other program stakeholders.
Successful applicant and supervisor will work out a mutually-agreeable schedule, which could be part-time or full-time in scope. While some work can be done remotely and on a flexible schedule, significant portions of the position may require in-person work during business hours. Work locations include the Circularity Center (warehouse and store on WashU’s North Campus, 700 Rosedale), the Office of Sustainability (Schnuck Pavilion on the Danforth Campus), and various networking meetings with campus and community partners (though these will likely be mostly remote). At least 1 1-hour meeting with supervisor and student will occur weekly through the duration of the engagement, at a mutually agreeable time during the work week.
In addition, the practicum students will be encouraged to participate in the Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change internship program, which provides interdisciplinary professional development and social experiences with undergraduate and graduate students working in internship positions through WashU.
Fully engaged students will gain a broad range of hands-on experience that mirror non-profit and start-up social enterprise contexts with the resources and support of a large institution.
Preferred skills, qualifications, and characteristics
Some combination of coursework and experience in the following areas are desired, though not all are required to apply:
- Self-starter, independently motivated, entrepreneurial spirit
- Working knowledge of sustainability and “circular economies”
- Program evaluation and assessment design

Environmental Studies Impact Internships
Environmental Studies understands that our students don’t only want to learn about environmental issues in class. They also want to apply their knowledge & skills on the ground, and make a positive impact in our community. Our Impact Internships embed students within St. Louis organizations, engaging with the environmental issues that impact people’s lives every day. To become an Impact Intern, students may apply to available internships with Environmental Studies’ existing partner organizations (listed below), or seek environmental internships in the St. Louis region of their own choosing.

This position is part of the Campus Climate Action Corp. This comes with an additional $1460 AmeriCorps award that the intern will apply to separately. Interns are asked to do an extra 40 hours (300 hours total) over the summer.
As a River City Outdoors Intern you will work closely with the Program Manager to help achieve the desired outcomes which is to change the way outdoor recreation is accessed in the region by removing barriers and educating our community using our equity lens.
We will engage through our already and continuing to grow partner network, providing youth opportunities to learn about, play and enjoy different recreational activities that can include river trips, fishing, rock climbing, camping, and paddling to name a few. We will also educate and advocate what it means to be a good steward to our environment. The intern will play a key role as we seek to expand our network of community partners and strengthen the bonds with existing ones. Through meetings with key stakeholders from the education, political, business and non-profit sectors throughout the region so that we can best leverage our network to best serve our communities.
The Intern will:
1. Assist in day-to day operation in all aspects of programming, teaching and scheduling events in the community.
2. Develop written documents such as activity guides to be used by educators and a RCO program calendar.
3. Assists in representing RCO views to community members and the general public by giving testimony, participating in meetings, public speaking events, and by establishing and maintaining professional contacts.
4. Performs some general office duties and other duties as assigned.

Metropolitan Congregations United (MCU) is a grassroots organization composed of St. Louis area congregations of all faiths. They put faith into action by developing leaders who move their congregations, organizations, and communities to change public policy for the common good. Since our organization’s founding in 1991, MCU’s efforts have utilized relational organizing tools to build grassroots community power by developing strong relationships grounded in trust and leadership building to fight for collective social justice. MCU is the Environmental Justice campaign started in 2020. This campaign aims to support clergy leaders, community groups, and impacted residents to build the power necessary to fuel a local environmental justice movement and fight for policy change that addresses the disproportional impacts of environmental racism on low-income communities of color.
MCU is partnering with 19 organizations to hold air quality monitors and do community meetings, working as a coalition to implement recently passed legislation in Missouri on Get Out the Lead, and continuing to push for illegal dumping reform. The 2019 Environmental Racism in St. Louis report detailed the lack of available outdoor air quality data in St. Louis City. High rates of asthma and many point sources of air pollution in North St. Louis City. In response, we have created and found funding for the Community Based Air Quality Monitoring Program to launch the campaign in a larger way in 2021.
The Air Quality Monitoring Intern will report directly to Beth Gutzler, Lead Environmental Justice Organizer for MCU, and will work with other members of MCU as needed. This internship is expected to be mainly remote, with periodic socially-distanced, masked, in-person activities. Regular communications with your supervisor will occur by phone and video.
Internship Activities:
- Assist MCU’s environmental justice team with outreach to develop strong relationships with local congregations, clergy leaders, and residents of color throughout St. Louis, MO utilizing basic relational organizing tools. Training for organizing leadership development will be provided. 20% of role
- Intern will assist with the sharing of results with community based air quality monitoring work with members of the Washington University Jay Turner Lab with stakeholders. 20% of role
- Assist with providing presentations and education workshops on air quality and other EJ topics for the Interfaith Environmental Justice Task Force, youth groups, and community leaders. To form environmental justice focused policy change for 2024 and beyond. 20% of role
- Maintain communication with MCU Environmental Justice Campaign Staff and attend MCU activities. 20% of role
- Researching the needs for the upcoming issues and concerns for impacted communities. Environmental Justice policy changes involve a high level of science and there is a need for complex information to be presented ready for public forums. For example, reading and interrupting an air quality permit, so that a community can decide if there should be a public hearing held or appeal made by neighbors concerned about new pollution in their community. 20% of role

Qualifications:
- Experience navigating conversations about race and racism, the environment, science, and public policy
- Working toward a major or minor in, or have taken significant coursework in, a combination of public health, engineering, data analysis, and/or environmental studies preferred

United Congregations of Metro-East (UCM) is seeking a full-time Environmental Justice Intern to lead and organize communities and organizations to work on restorative, transformative, and environmental justice issues in the Illinois Metro-East, throughout Madison and St. Clair Counties. This role is primarily responsible for building and maintaining relationships with local congregations and key actors throughout the Metro-East. Additionally, this role is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with statewide and national coalition partners
The ideal candidate has a proven ability to foster coordination and cooperation among diverse groups. They are committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and can handle a heavy workload without dropping the ball. United Congregations of Metro East Communications Intern works primarily to support the upkeep, growth, and development of the UCM base and provide creative, logistical, and organizational support for all programs. This role includes liaising with UCM program staff across the organization, with members, and their families, and supporting the escalation of members of the UCM base to take action and engage with UCM programs.
The Donor cultivator Intern, who is based in East St. Louis, reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the following:
Development
- Audit and assess existing recurring donors – Sustainers.
- Review the existing giving circle model and recruitment strategy.
- Develop a new strategy for recruitment, including structure and membership benefits for the sustainers’ circle, using previous research to make recommendations.
- Create materials for marketing and recruiting new members and retention of established members.
- Audit and assess existing peer-to-peer campaign materials and identify areas of needed improvement:
- Review existing materials from campaigns to consolidate and make them more concise.
- Research fundraising best practices for peer-to-peer campaigns and compare existing practices to devise the best strategy for new campaigns.
- Develop new peer-to-peer campaigns using previous research to create procedures, materials, and timelines.
- Implement and assess campaign effectiveness and provide a report of recommendations for future changes.

Intern Role
To work alongside Artist and Director, Juan WIlliam Chávez and Master Gardener, Director of Sustainability & Programming, Kiersten Torrez. Interns help prepare materials + supplies for upcoming programs and help maintain the teaching garden and native bee sanctuary.
Start & End Date
End of May 2024 – End of July/Early August 2024 with the possibility of extending into Fall of ’24. Hybrid work, flexible. But only PART-TIME (130 total hours) during the Summer of 2024. Specific hourly schedules are determined by intern and their supervisor.

● Learning to prepare and lead art and educational workshops about native bees and plants.
● Practicing Permaculture & chemical-free growing techniques using native plants to create habitat for pollinators.

The Business Development Intern will be a driving force within our membership outreach. Primary responsibilities will be to identify potential customers establish new prospective client relationships and drive new revenue for the company. The Business Development Internship also serves as a launch point for exploring multiple areas and opportunities in our rapidly growing startup. We are looking for outgoing candidates with passion for entrepreneurship, the ability to learn quickly and execute with excellence, organization skills, attention to detail, and superior communication skills. The ideal candidate will be organized, have a bias for action, and have a deep commitment to growth and learning. This role will involve a dynamic range of initiatives that have a tangible and significant impact on the non-profit.
This position is flexible, Monday to Saturday and averages 15 hours per week.
The BD Intern will report to the Executive Director. While this position is currently a 12-week commitment, there will be opportunities to receive training and development as well as continue with a part-time or full-time position when Be Well Cafe, Market and Coworking Space opens in the Summer.

- Analyze the effectiveness of Be Well Café & Market current business strategy
- Contact nonprofits, schools, medical organizations, entrepreneurs, and recipe curators to forge potential partnerships and develop business relationships
- This person will help Be Well Café & Market build and raise brand awareness through all facets of marketing and business development.
- Conducting background research on competitors, countries, projects, donor priorities and funding, and other business development specific information.
- Contributing to the development and maintenance of databases and filing systems.
- Providing administrative and logistical support, including organizing meetings and conference calls with potential partners, members, donors and staff

A Social Media Intern, or Social Media Marketing Intern, is responsible for assisting in a range of marketing initiatives within an organization. Their duties include tracking analytics for social media campaigns, creating social media posting schedules and writing captions for social media posts.
The BW Intern will report to the Executive Director and Cafe/Market Manager. While this position is currently requires a 12 week commitment, there will be opportunities to receive training and development as well as continue with a part-time or full-time position when Be Well Cafe and Market opens this Summer.
Responsibilities
- Co-coordinating Be Well’s Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, TicToc and other social media accounts
- Identifying opportunities (such as in the general media) where raising such an awareness is necessary

- Engage followers using creativity to keep followers up to date on Be Well Café & Market news
- Assist in the growth of the brand by raising awareness through various social media platform
- Monitor postings to ensure brand message is constant; from the terminology used to images posted
- Outreach to local nonprofit, schools, and medical organizations to forge partnerships
- Interact with followers and potential customers by communicating and answering questions through the company’s social pages
- Analyze the effectiveness of social media account
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience in digital marketing/social media marketing
- Business, marketing, journalism, public relations ore related field
- Social media analytics software including Facebook Insights, Google Analytic, & etc
- Familiar with multi-social posting through programs such as Asana, Hootsuite and Hubspot
- General Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization and internet ranking for web content
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Positive work ethic, able to work within a team and independently
- Ability to work cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds
- Interest in improving healthy food access and community development
- Experience with content management systems, word processor applications and image/video editing software

Midwest Climate Collaborative
The Midwest Climate Collaborative is a project of Washington University, hosted by the Center for the Environment, working at a regional level to accelerate climate action. We’re bringing together representatives across the Midwest from higher education, local government, business, and the non-profit sectors to craft and implement a response to the climate crisis. The summer internship program will focus on developing the Midwest Climate Resource Network (CRN), a site launched last year to connect climate leaders and practitioners in the region to one another and resources, policies, tool-kits, maps, and data relevant to the Midwest. This is a full-time position over the summer that will be focused on editing and updating the prototype CRN site and designing programming to foster stronger connections and enhanced collaboration around the CRN’s resources. This position also offers the opportunity to meet others working in the region on climate; attend virtual and in-person events with climate researchers and practitioners; and support the MCC’s general operations, including drafting e-newsletters, writing blog pieces, and tracking climate commitments across the region.
SKILLS REQUIRED
- Highly organized
- Strong time management skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and confidence communicating with leaders in higher education, government, and the corporate and non-profit sectors
- Some Knowledge of climate change topics
- Experience using google drive and related products, MS Office Suite, or similar products
- Experience with web design, preferably WordPress, or comparable skills
- Experiencing organizing meetings or events (virtual or in-person)
37.5 hrs/wk for 10 weeks between May – August.
