Abstract

Our group is working with the Electrical and Systems Engineering Department to develop increased capabilities for a Traxxas RC car. The goal for our project is to have our car autonomously drive in a straight line around a room as well as use a camera to identify traffic signals and other common traffic signs and be able to respond accordingly. With machine learning, it will be possible to train our car to recognize the different colors in a traffic signal and further identify saturation levels to distinguish which color is currently lit; allowing the car to stop and start depending on the color recognized. Additionally, with the ability to recognize traffic signs, our car will be able to turn right and left accordingly.

To extend the capabilities of the car, the camera was utilized in conjunction with a machine learning program to detect and respond to traffic signals through the motor speed function.
