Are you interested in knowing how artifact collectors can reduce their chances of being scammed? If so, this course is for you! This course covers the science underlying the scientific tools used to authenticate art and artifacts and detect forgeries. It examines case studies of forged objects and some objects that appear to be authentic, but have unclear aspects. Some of the featured artifacts include the mined versus lab created diamonds, Getty Kouros, the bronze Metropolitan Horse, Oaxacan ceramics at the St Louis Art Museum, the Vinland Map, La Bella Principessa, Piltdown Hoax, Shroud of Turin. Techniques that will be studied include radiocarbon age dating, thermoluminescence age dating, and stable isotope fingerprinting.
