Our Current Project Information

Client Information: Our client is UN&UP with our main point of contact being Michael Sabo.

Need Statement: A way to decrease the time between physician intervention and localized drug delivery in affected areas for individuals undergoing frostbite treatment to improve patient outcomes and increase limb retention and function.

Project Scope: There is a need for a method for faster and more localized drug delivery and treatment of frostbite. Timelier and targeted therapeutic intervention will improve patient outcomes and increase limb retention and function. The device will be able to conform to and operate with various sizes, shapes, and orientations of extremities impacted by frostbite, and the therapeutic agent should reach affected areas within 1 minute of device activation. We will deliver a programmable control system for a magnet and a realistic phantom reflecting the dynamics of extremity vasculature to our client by April 25, 2025.

Initial Design Specifications:

1. Patient can be outfitted in the device in under 5 minutes.2. Device will be battery-operable with a storage battery life of 24 hours.
3. Therapeutic agent should reach affected areas within 1 minute of device activation.4. Device will be battery-operable with an active battery life of 8 hours.
5. Device can be snuggly fitted over a wrist with sizes between 11.5 cm to 21.5cm.6. Device will cost less than $750 to produce.
7. Iron oxide particles will not be exposed to a magnetic field greater than 5 Gauss. 8. Device will be comfortable to wear for up to 8 hours.
9. Device weighs less than 2 kg. 10. Device components will be sum to less than 5 parts.
11. Device works with individuals with prosthetic limbs or limbs affected by a disability. 12. Patient can be outfitted in the device by no more than one person.
13. Patient can be outfitted in the device with only one hand.
Initial Design Specifications as of 9/13/24

Future Steps

Currently contacting physicians that specialize in the treatment and novel research of Frostbite to gain insight on the current treatment flow patients undergo and gain insight into how we can shape our project and understand the needs of both physicians and patients.
