Dr. Vilray Blair — one of the founders of the plastic surgery specialty — initially developed the training program at Washington University School of Medicine in the early 20th Century. Many plastic surgeons who trained under Blair and his pupils went on to become leaders in academic medicine as well as introducing innovations in plastic surgery.
Today, the fully accredited training program offers comprehensive training in plastic surgery.
The plastic surgery training program at Washington University in St. Louis is a six-year integrated program. The program includes 1 year of general surgery – and 5 years of plastic surgery training in breast, craniofacial, head/neck trauma, hand, microsurgery, cosmetics and peripheral nerve surgery. Also included are sub-specialty rotations in oculoplastics, surgical dermatology, orthopedic trauma, and anesthesia. Rotations in all the general surgery experiences required by the American Board of Plastic Surgery are also included.
The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery also offers Hand/Microsurgery and Craniofacial fellowships.
