A new FTIR spectrometer: Thermo Nicolet IS50 was installed in 2023

• Spectral range: 11,000 to 400 cm-1 (NIR to mid-IR)
• Spectral resolution: variable with max 0.125cm-1
• IR Detectors: LN2 cooled MTC-B detector (11,700-400cm-1) and GST
• Near IR Source: tungsten halogen (25,000-2000 cm-1)
• Mid IR Source: globar (9,600-20 cm -1)
• Ge/KBr Beam splitter: (11,000 – 375 cm-1)

Sampling accessories:

• Transmittance: Standard transmission accessory
• Attenuated Total Reflectance: Golden Gate diamond ATR accessory
• Reflectance: A Harrick “Cricket” combined diffuse reflectance and specular reflectance accessory
• Fiber ATR probe: diamond tip attached to PIR optical fiber cable (3300 -550 cm-1) & a fiber mount Emission Port: Internal directing mirrors and instrument port for focusing an external emission source

Sample preparations:

• Powder sample — no sample preparation needed
• Liquid sample — no sample preparation needed
• Film sample — no sample preparation needed
• Rock sample – to be cut with at least one bottom flat surface for reflectance study (< 5 mm diameter)
