Advanced clinical training

Over 2 years, fellows will develop skills in neonatal and pediatric emergency and inpatient care, procedural sedation, circumcision, transport medicine, and airway management. These skills will be utilized at St. Louis Children’s Hospital as well as a community hospital (Missouri Baptist Medical Center).  Our fellowship also offers a strong foundation in newborn medicine. Duties include newborn nursery attending at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in addition to covering IIB NICU at MBMC in addition to the hospitalist newborn service.  All fellows become both PALS and NRP instructors. The fellows will also participate in the Washington University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics Fellow’s Forum which will cover research, ethics, leadership, and career development.

Scholarship

Research is a strong mission at Washington University School of Medicine. Through opportunities from the Department of Pediatrics and the wider School of Medicine, fellows will have ample opportunities to connect with mentors and participate in an independent project. Our faculty is heavily involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education. There is ample opportunity to participate in medical student and resident education and to develop scholarship in education. Fellows will be expected to learn the basics of Quality Improvement and join a patient safety initiative. Fellows are required to complete a scholarly project during their two year fellowship in a topic area of interest including medical education, QI, or clinical research.

Electives

Fellows will have ample opportunity to participate in elective time. The sedation service at Children’s Hospital provides care for a variety of procedures.  Electives can also be tailored to the individual fellow. Previous fellows have completed electives in pediatric surgery, rheumatology, neurology, genetics, medical education, and anesthesiology.
