The Pediatric Epilepsy Center in the Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) and St. Louis Children’s Hospital offers a one-year, ACGME accredited fellowship in Pediatric Epilepsy beginning on July 1 annually. The program offers extensive training in all aspects of clinical pediatric epilepsy. The fellowship includes a weekly half-day continuity clinic and rotations in the outpatient EEG laboratory, the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), and in Adult Epilepsy. It also offers a month elective in an area of relevance to Pediatric Epilepsy and a one-week selective in any of the subspecialty clinics in the Pediatric Epilepsy Center. Fellows will gain expertise in the clinical management of pediatric epilepsy, the evaluation of children for epilepsy surgery and neurostimulation, the interpretation of EEG-video monitoring in the EMU and critically ill neonates and children, and the interpretation of stereo EEG.

Fellows will interact with Pediatric Epilepsy Center faculty including 11 pediatric epileptologists with expertise in different areas of pediatric epilepsy, a pediatric neurosurgeon, and two pediatric neuropsychologists. The center also has two nurse practitioners and a dietitian. St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the primary clinical site, is a 390 bed tertiary and quaternary pediatric hospital that is the pediatric teaching hospital for WUSM and has a 41 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a 125 bed Newborn Intensive Care Unit. We received accreditation as a Level IV center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. We offer advanced imaging including PET and SPECT scans; epilepsy surgery using open procedures and laser ablation; dietary therapy; neurostimulation such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and responsive neurostimulation (RNS); and clinical trials.

Graduates of US child neurology training programs who are board-eligible in Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (APBN) and who wish to obtain training that qualifies them to sit for the ABPN subspecialty exam in Epilepsy are eligible to apply. Highly qualified graduates of child neurology training programs outside the US are encouraged to apply. International medical graduates must be ECFMG certified.
