If my team advances to the finals, do we have to present our case in person?

Yes. All finalists must present in person.

Is lodging provided for the two-night stay in St. Louis?

Yes, each team will receive two complimentary double-occupancy rooms for two nights lodging, February 8-9, 2024, at the Meridian in Clayton, and some meals. Transportation to and from campus will also be provided by Olin.

Can my team include both graduate and undergraduate students?

No, teams must be comprised of either four undergraduate students or four graduate students; they cannot be mixed.

Each team is composed of four presenters.  Presenting teams should register as either graduate or undergraduate only, the teams cannot include both.  To be eligible, teams must submit a completed registration and a $200 nonrefundable registration fee (per team).

Can my team present virtually if they advance to the finals? 

 No, all finalists must agree to compete in person in St. Louis on February 9, 2023. Teams will be required to commit to an in-person presentation one month out of the competition, if a team cannot commit to an in-person finale, they will forfeit their opportunity to advance to the finals and present. Finalists must commit to in-person no later than January 9, 2024, or forfeit.  

If my team places, will I receive a cash payment during the awards?

No, winning teams must provide student affairs contact during the registration process. This contact will receive the check award, made out to the school, and then distributed by the student’s school to each student on the winning team.

If my team advances to the finals, can we continue to work on our case?

Yes, teams advancing to the finals can work on their presentation up until the finals.

Is my registration fee refundable?

No, registration fees are not refundable.

Can only business students compete in the case competition? 

No, Olin and the organizers of the Values and Data Case Competition welcome students in all educational programs in higher education. Although Olin is a business school, we recognize the significant opportunity students in multiple programs of study can create when collaborating.  

Is an alternate team member required to form a team? 

Although an alternate is not required, it is recommended- an alternate would only need to travel if one of the registered four team members advancing to the finals is unable to participate due to illness, emergency, or a scheduling conflict. 

What day are the finals? 

Ten teams, five undergraduate and five graduate teams, will advance to the finals and present in person at the Washington University Emerson Theatre in the Olin School of Business at 8:30 a.m. on February 9, 2023. After lunch, student teams will travel by charter to downtown St. Louis for a quick tour of City Park, the home of City SC, and the winning team announcements with the Taylor family.
