Degree Programs

PhD

Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science

Train as a future researcher and industry leader under the guidance of experienced informatics faculty. As a candidate in the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences PhD program, you will develop interdisciplinary expertise in the transformation of real-world data into knowledge and the creation of interventions to apply information in the context of biomedicine.

Throughout the program, learners will engage in solving problems in clinical practice, individual and population health, data science, and biomedical research, through the optimal use of information. No GRE is required for this program.

MS and Certificate

Master of Science and Certificate in Biomedical Informatics

Train in core biomedical informatics theories and methods to address the fundamental shift toward integrative and data-intensive approaches to research. The Biomedical Informatics MS offers grounded theory and applied skills for in-career learners with a broad range of experience in biomedicine, mathematics, computer science, or social sciences.

Individuals applying for an NIH Research and Career Development award may submit their proposals in lieu of a formal application. The certificate program requires 16 credit hours and a condensed capstone project.

Master of Science and Certificate in Biostatistics and Data Science

Review, analyze and interpret health data using statistical and data science approaches by combining core data science learning in statistical and computational methodologies with real-world training. Students in the biostatistics and data science MS program frequently have access to employment opportunities including research assistantships.

Students earning the biostatistics and data science certificate will be proficient in biostatistical concepts and foundations, including exploratory data analysis, regression and classification, predictive modeling, and data mining.

Master of Science in Biostatistics

Choose the traditional biostatistics graduate program or the statistical genetics pathway with immersive learning in statistical programming, computational methods, and research experiences. This biostatistics MS is ideal for those with undergraduate or higher degrees in quantitative sciences seeking career development in the field of biostatistics.

Graduate students will form relationships with distinguished faculty and partake in innovative, NIH-funded research while enrolled in the biostatistics internship during the second summer semester.

Certificate in Genetic Epidemiology

Learn to analyze and interpret genetic data using key statistical and genetic analysis approaches to understand the etiology and control of disease. The genetic epidemiology certificate program is designed to serve research staff and medical employees, medical students, and others who want to learn the fundamentals of genetic epidemiology.

Internship

Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at I2 Summer Research Internship

Under the guidance of faculty mentors and research scientists, the paid internship allows undergraduate and graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds to focus on the support and elevation of biomedical informatics through research translation and practice.

Students selected for the 12-week data science and biomedical informatics internship work within a lab setting with faculty members partaking in active research. The program culminates in a poster session event for the WUSM community.

Immersion Program

Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Fellowship Immersion Program

Engage in a semester-long boot camp experience to gain in-demand skills for educational and professional development in translational biomedical informatics, applied clinical informatics, or population health informatics through mentored research opportunities and solving real-world problems.

Trainees accepted into the 13-week biomedical informatics fellowship distinguish themselves from peers applying to PhD or master’s programs. The fellowship culminates with a pitch competition in which participants present innovative solutions to a panel of judges.

All-Expenses-Paid Program to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE)

Washington University School of Medicine offers an all-expense-paid summer institute program to increase diversity in the field of Cardiovascular Disease Comorbidities, Genetics and Epidemiology (CVD-CGE). The program is open to junior faculty and researchers (mentees) in the biomedical and behavioral sciences from underrepresented backgrounds and/or with disabilities.

Participants develop partnerships with mentors to develop skills needed to apply for research grants and promote a sustainable independent research program.

Post-Residency Training

Clinical Informatics Fellowship

Fellows develop scientific and technical expertise in all facets of clinical informatics, such as in the design and implementation of electronic health records and clinical decision support systems at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

The fellowship is designed to meet the training requirements for ACGME board certification in clinical informatics. The program includes graduate coursework in biomedical informatics and the opportunity to earn a graduate certificate.
