WashU Elevates Educational Experiences with Secure and Modern Networks

“We are a dynamic and ever-expanding higher education institution ranked in the top 25 of national universities, we must have a high standard for the technology we deploy across campus,”

Greg Hart, Chief Technology Officer

In April 2024, Washington University in St. Louis selected Extreme Networks to modernize its network infrastructure and create a strategic foundation for delivering innovative and secure technology-based learning.

The move to an end-to-end network fabric helps the university enhance security and simplify network complexity for student and staff productivity and campus operations. This network upgrade simplifies network management through automation and centralized control to create One Network, reducing the complexity of network configuration and expansion. By leveraging modern network fabric, the University can easily manage the entire network, including third-party applications and devices.

“We are a dynamic and ever-expanding higher education institution ranked in the top 25 of national universities, we must have a high standard for the technology we deploy across campus,” said Greg Hart, Chief Technology Officer, at Washington University in St. Louis. “The network is the strategic foundation of educational experiences, student and staff productivity and campus operations – it has to work. With the Network Modernization Project we will reduce the complexity of network management, streamline network operations and reduce overhead. And, most importantly, we will create a secure, resilient and high-performing network that fuels innovation and experiences across our campus.”

Today’s higher education organizations require a network that can keep up with the growing number of users, devices, and applications that students and staff rely on to access online resources, submit coursework, and complete exams. Further, Washington University will have built-in security and hyper-segmentation, dramatically limiting the risks of edge and IoT devices compromising the network.

Key Facts:

  • Secure, Flexible Network Fabric: Washington University requires 100% uptime to ensure uninterrupted learning everywhere on campus. By modernizing the network, the University will be able to create a flexible network that can meet various campus needs and can be segmented to minimize the potential blast radius of a lateral attack.
  • Future-Proof, Flexible Infrastructure: With modern Universal Switches, Washington University will have a reliable wired network infrastructure that delivers optimized performance for all existing and future needs. The university can also proceed with future network upgrades without replacing existing network hardware.
  • Professional Services Supporting Project Success: Washington University will work with the vendor throughout its wired network modernization process. The team will manage the project from network design to implementation, ensuring an optimized deployment process and minimizing potential interruptions to daily university operations.
