Yaacov Agam, 8 + 1 en mouvement (8 + 1 in movement), 1953/1959

One of a series of works Yaacov Agam called “transformable pictures,” 8 + 1 en mouvement consists of a black lacquered wooden plate with twelve holes drilled into the surface in a line down the center. Eight white bars mounted on metal sticks can be removed, inserted, and pivoted in a multitude of ways. Agam attached great importance to the viewer’s act of choosing, believing that it would permit a more spontaneous and intense contact with the work of art than passive observation.
