Daniel Spoerri

Daniel Spoerri, Multiplicateur d’art (Art multiplier) or Spiegelobjekt (Mirror object), 1964

Daniel Spoerri’s Multiplicateur d’art, French for art multiplier, his first contributed artwork to Edition MAT, consists of pairs of household objects—blocks, whisks, brushes, toy figurines, harmonicas—affixed to two mirrors attached by a hinge. Each example of this multiple is unique as the objects glued to the mirrors and their orientation are always different. Changing the angle between the mirrors not only creates new compositions but also doubles ad infinitum the reflected objects. The Multiplicateur d’art is a witty variation on Spoerri’s celebrated snare pictures begun in 1960, wall-mounted assemblages of everyday objects that freeze chance moments in time.
