The gallery Multiples Inc. opened in New York in the fall of 1965 with the stated goal of taking “the snobbism out of art collecting.” It embraced an expansive methodology, commissioning and distributing multiples of all kinds and juxtaposing works from Edition MAT with kinetic, Op, Fluxus, and Pop objects. This display case presents a similar mix of multiples, underscoring the popularity of the format on the part of artists and dealers alike as well as the notable lack of any unifying attitude within the broadening field of multiples by the mid-1960s.
