Danil V. Makarov, MD, MHS

Danil V. Makarov, MD, MHS is a board-certified urologist and a fellowship trained health services researcher. He received his undergraduate degree in economics with distinction from Yale University (Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude) and his medical degree at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha). He completed his residency in urology at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Makarov continued on the faculty at Johns Hopkins after which he completed a Masters in Health Sciences Research as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Makarov joined NYU faculty in 2010 as Assistant Professor of Urology, Population Health and Health Policy. He serves as Director of Surgical Research in the Department of Population Health and Director of Urological Health Services Research in the Department of Urology. Dr. Makarov is interested in appropriateness of care as well as the diffusion of medical innovation and its effect on the cost and quality of care for men with prostate cancer. Dr. Makarov has a Career Development Award from the Veterans Health Administration to investigate how technology diffusion affects regional variation in utilization, appropriateness and cost for men with prostate cancer in the VHA. In the future, he hopes to leverage the understanding gained through these investigations to design large scale behavioral interventions to improve healthcare for cancer patients in the United States.
