Figurations of Unheimlichkeit: Homelessness and the Identity of “Jews” in Sebald, Maron and Honigmann

The figuration of “Jews” in the literature of Sebald, Maron, and Honigmann is explored here, supplemented by a brief consideration of the works of Bernhard and Düffel. The discussion aims at reconstructing the function of Jewish figures that embody the identity of Unheimlichkeit (the uncanny) and that harbor the destiny of Heimatlosigkeit (homelessness) in German poetical and cultural discourse. Since the Wende, the well known figure of Ahasver, the Wandering Jew, has attained new meaning and now signifies further horizons of literary work. The old/new figure is reinterpreted as an agent of memory, as a messenger from forgotten places, and as a Doppelgänger of the German writer. As such, the “Jews” embody the fundamental nature of the script as well as an ethos of authorship.

Autobiographical Re-vision: Ruth Klüger’s weiter leben and Still Alive

In 2001, Ruth Klüger published Still Alive, the English version of her 1992 autobiography weiter leben. Despite their common thematic focus on her experience during the Holocaust and its aftermath, however, Klüger stresses that the two texts are in no way identical: “What you have been reading is neither a translation nor a new book: it’s another version, a parallel book.” Still Alive is thus not a rewriting of weiter leben but rather, as this article investigates, a second autobiographical performance that reconceives itself in terms of audience and impetus without attempting to efface the prior text. Klüger’s joint autobiographical project provides an interesting challenge to more conventional notions of autobiography and the status of the autobiographer, raising a number of critical questions that illustrate the complexity of her conception of the genre.

Wounded Body, Wounded History, Wounded Text: “Transgenerational Trauma” in Thomas Harlan’s Rosa

Based on the writer’s research of Nazi crimes in the Kulmhof extermination camp, Rosa is a text about the trauma that still haunts the people who came in contact with the genocide: victims, perpetrators, bystanders and, in the form of cultural memory, their descendants. On another level, it is a text that, through its rejection of coherent narration, linear development, and closure, itself epitomizes the unnarratability of the traumatic past. The essay analyzes how the writer attempts to confront the phantoms of the German past and his own positioning in it. In this sense, Harlan’s representation of Holocaust trauma as a metonym of pain, shared universally across groups and generations, is problematic. Viewing trauma as a “normal” state in the post-Holocaust/postmodern world not only deflates the concept of trauma but also disavows the discussion of guilt and responsibility on both the individual and the collective level.

“Brichst du auf gen Ithaka . .

Landscape, Seascape, Cyberscape: Narrative Strategies to Dredge up the Past in Günter Grass’s Novella Im Krebsgang

The literary strategies in Günter Grass’s novella Im Krebsgang are explored in order to assess the readerly qualities of the narrative and to position it within Grass’s oeuvre as a whole. Examining the text’s aesthetic qualities reveals continuities in Grass’s poetics that reach back to Die Blechtrommel and have contributed significantly to his wide popularity. The narrative strategies investigated include Grass’s use of a first-person narrator, analepsis, prolepsis, and others common to the genre of the novella. The “crabwalk” metaphor is analyzed in detail as the embodiment of the Futurist concepts of dynamic motion and temporal simultaneity, the latter of which Grass refers to as “Vergegenkunft.” The text is not simply a novella about the sinking of a ship and its aftermath, it is also a highly constructed metanarrative that sheds light upon the many ways German history has been and can be constructed.

Populism, Performance, and Postmodern Aesthetics: Christoph Schlingensief’s Politics of Social Intervention

Filmmaker, director, and performance artist Christoph Schlingensief has become known for his production of political theater, site-specific installations in public spaces, and appropriation of television programming in order to produce social interventions. His aesthetic strategies implicate his projects in the paradoxical nature of populist politics and social promotions in contemporary Europe. Schlingensief appropriates populist discourses of exclusion and empowerment in order to create sites for the expression of political passions and subversion, e.g. his production of Hamlet. The use of performative process in projects such as the Church of Fear defies the fixity of representation, which the media and government utilize to frame culture and politics and which postmodern culture attempts, but often fails, to destabilize.

Female Flâneurs: Judith Hermann’s Sommerhaus, später and Nichts als Gespenster

A critical look at Judith Hermann’s short stories is presented in an attempt to illuminate their complex relation to earlier traditions in German literature. As they consciously avoid engagement with recent history and politics and turn instead to the quotidian, the characters in the stories seem to be adapting the aesthetics of solipsistic observation typical of the flâneur literature of the 1920s. Hermann’s stories re-appropriate—perhaps not directly and explicitly but at least evocatively—the detached, apolitical, vaguely nostalgic, and slightly anachronistic stance of a Weimar flâneurFlânerie in the 1990s has adapted selectively certain features of the earlier tradition: instead of exploring the heuristic and diagnostic potential of flânerie, Hermann has chosen to revive only the atmospheric elements of the practice and its aloof postures of disengagement.

The Transnationalization of the Double Motif: Rafik Schami’s Sieben Doppelgänger

The Doppelgänger has been a major motif in German literature since Jean Paul coined the term in his novel Siebenkäs (1796-97). Schami’s novel adapts this motif to the realities of the multicultural diaspora in contemporary Germany. His seven Doubles both reflect and deconstruct the orientalist clichés predominant among the ethnic Germans who attend the Doubles’ public readings of the author/narrator’s works. While the real-life Schami enjoyed such readings before he made the decision to suspend them in order to devote full attention to his writing, Sieben Doppelgänger highlights the problem of interethnic perception evident at such performances, as well as the difficulty of maintaining a discrete personal identity and a unique authorial voice in an age of transnational cosmopolitanism with its attendant cultural homogenization.
