William Byansi, PhD

Dr. Byansi is an Assistant Professor at Boston College School of Social Work and a Global Mental Health Scholar with expertise in community-engaged research, intervention development and evaluation, and robust quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Dr. Byansi’s research focuses on enhancing adolescents’ access to mental health services within resource-constrained settings and those impacted and living with HIV and AIDS. He also examines the intricate interplay of individual, family, and community-level factors that contribute to the overall well-being of adolescents and their families. Dr. Byansi has actively contributed to implementing large-scale intervention research projects in Uganda, Kenya, and Ghana. He is currently adapting a trauma-focused cognitive behavioral intervention to address alcohol use among young adults living with HIV. Dr. Byansi has authored numerous publications that address the psychosocial well-being of vulnerable children and adolescents. His work has also explored the effectiveness of combination interventions in mitigating the vulnerabilities and mental health challenges of adolescents and their families in low-resource settings. Dr. Byansi received his Bachelor’s degree in Social and Social Administration from Makerere University in Uganda, a Master’s degree in Social Work from New York University, and a Ph.D. in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis.
