Mayuko Ito Fukunaga, MD

Dr. Ito Fukunaga is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Divisions of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care Medicine and Health Systems Science at the University of Massachusetts Chan (UMass Chan) Medical School. She is a current National Cancer Institute (NCI) K08 awardee and a scholar at the NCI-funded Implementation Science Center for Cancer Control at Wake Forest/UMass Chan. Her research focuses on the implementation of lung cancer screening by leveraging technology. Prior to joining UMass Chan, Dr. Ito Fukunaga served as a Co-Medical Director of the multidisciplinary thoracic oncology clinic at Maine Medical Center, conducted several quality improvement projects to improve lung cancer care delivery in rural communities, and led a successful initiative to begin a lung cancer screening program. She currently facilitates a multidisciplinary lung cancer screening and lung nodule conference and also serves as a Co-Director of the Cancer Screening Research Subcommittee at UMass Chan. In her current K08 project, Dr. Ito Fukunaga is developing a technology-assisted implementation program to improve the uptake of lung cancer screening in U.S primary care settings. During the HIGH IRI training, she hopes to expand her work to people living with HIV and in global settings to equitably reduce the global lung cancer burden.
