Matt Hickey, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is trained in HIV medicine, primary care, and implementation science and is both a clinician and the research lead for the POP-UP clinic, a low-barrier clinic-based care model for people living with HIV and experiencing homelessness in San Francisco.

Dr. Hickey has two primary research areas. His domestic research program is focused on developing and testing new strategies for improving HIV treatment outcomes for individuals facing barriers to care engagement including housing instability, substance use disorders, and mental health challenges. His global research program is focused on integrating hypertension interventions with HIV care to improve cardiovascular health in rural East Africa. He was awarded a K23 Career Development Award funded by NHLBI to develop strategies for improving the patient-centeredness of integrated hypertension-HIV care in Kenya. He also collaborates with the SEARCH Study in Kenya and Uganda where he leads hypertension research focused on addressing barriers to chronic hypertension care for individuals with severe hypertension.
