Kieran O’Brien, PhD, MPH, is an epidemiologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and the Francis I. Proctor Foundation at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. O’Brien received her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Broadly, her research focuses on the evaluation of community-based interventions to increase access to care in underserved populations using both randomized controlled trial and implementation science methodology. She currently co-leads the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded AVENIR trial which examines effectiveness and implementation outcomes of different approaches to the delivery of an azithromycin distribution program to increase child survival in Niger. In addition to her focus on child health, she also contributes to a variety of trials focused on the community-based prevention of ocular disease and blindness.
