Alison Castle, MD

HIGH IRI Fellow | Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School

Dr. Castle is an Infectious Disease clinician, practicing in both the United States and South Africa. She serves as a junior faculty member in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital, an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a collaborator at the Africa Health Research Institute. She is based in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa where her research interests range from understanding noncommunicable disease, HIV, and tuberculosis interactions at a population level to improving access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among high incidence, minimally engaged populations. Her research and clinical experiences have guided the development of a new proposal. The project aims to optimize healthcare engagement among men who frequent informal venues that serve alcohol, known as shebeens, within KwaZulu-Natal. The community-based, patient-oriented mobile clinic intervention to bolster men’s engagement with HIV services and PrEP will be evaluated rigorously using implementation science methods. Dr. Castle is keen to further her training in the field of implementation science to guide and strengthen her future intervention research.
